An old Neon advertisement, from Edmunds.com

What is it? 1998 Dodge Neon Sport coupe with a 5 speed manual. The Sport trim level came with a 2.0 liter, dual overhead cam inline four-banger that put out roughly 150 ponies and 133 pound-feet of torque.

Pros: Cheap; great fuel economy; sporty-ish; great base for budget racing; every junkyard has 40 spare Neons if you need parts

Neon rear end. I know this is a sedan. But looking for pictures of a Neon is like looking for stock photos. There’s a ton out there, but all of them are just slightly wrong for what you need. Photo from autoevolution.com

Cons: Rattling noises; low torque/low-RPM acceleration; no rear legroom

Recommendation: If you are looking for economy, look no further than a 1st gen Neon. Honestly, I was stretching to find cons for this car and I would recommend it to anyone. It’s fun, reliable, and cost effective whether you want a budget racecar or just a daily driver.

My neon had this same perfect 90's interior. Photo from 1GN.com

Brothers from alternate mothers?

I resonate strongly with this, as my first car was a Neon. Everyone starts somewhere. I also went through a number of oddly similar situations that you describe.

Im ultimately saddened by the loss of it, as I T Boned a Silverado 1500 that ran a light, not because it was a good car, or because it was particularly reliable (mine was anything but). I simply miss it because I had fun with it. It wasnt a gas guzzler, it wasnt anything impressive, but we learned to dance well together. I could wind it up, row through the gears and easily give the car the beans without being anywhere near the strong arm of the law.

Its a great first car, its a great started race car, and all of its imperfections just amplify that. I have a V8 and a V12 now, which is both awesome but a burden of both finances and responsibility. Maintenance is certainly escalated as well.

Cars like the Neon just do a good job at showing you why you dont need all of the extra power or bells and whistles. And as a first car, the Neon helps you learn that. Ive done plenty of dumb things in it, but it was more than enough. Younger people just need more small, cheap cars that are fun to help them learn all of that.

I dont think I would appreciate what I have now as much if the Neon wasnt my first car.

I test drove a first gen Neon (which I suspect was a stolen car) and I remember liking it for what it was; a cheap mode of transport.

A friend of mine owns a second gen Neon and I can tell you that it’s definitely no different in terms of appreciation for what it is.

Do I think they’re both good cars? Eh, if you can’t afford anything else, it beats walking.

Absolutely agree. Neons were/are a cool way to get into working on cars and get to know how things work in cars. Easy to maintain and a ton of aftermarket stuff if you want to go that route.

Damn, you’re making me want to craigslist hunt for one...
